Defining what an ‘awesome blog’ is really hard; I appreciate perspicuous writing, useful insights, a sense of understanding, an interesting topic, and several other factors.

Bret Devereaux manages to check all of these effortlessly in his history blog A Collection of Unmitigated Pedantry. I stumbled on his four-part essay on medieval people baking bread and I got immedately hooked despite the seemingly simplistic topic. Bret’s insights into medieval culture and economy are readily apparent and he gives you a complex, encompassing view into ancient society in these posts. (Other times, he investigates the possibilities of space combat. Fucking awesome!)

Other highlight include his four part series on medieval iron amd his amusing analysis of the battles in Lord Of The Rings and Game Of Thrones.

For the majority of my life, history was a cold subject for me. In the last few years, this is changing as I find more and more valuable content about ancient history, and this is definitely one of them. Highly recommended!
